Step by Step Assessments

At Apostolos Assessments, members of our clinical team have undertaken accredited Step by Step training through the Association of Children's Welfare Agencies (ACWA), equipping them to complete comprehensive, competency-based assessments of prospective foster, relative/kinship, and guardianship carers.
The Step by Step framework is recognised as the benchmark assessment process for out-of-home care in New South Wales. It provides a structured, evidence-informed methodology for evaluating whether applicants possess the skills, knowledge, resilience, and capacity to provide safe, stable, and therapeutic care for children and young people who have experienced adversity, trauma, abuse, or neglect.
Rather than relying on a single interview or subjective opinion, Step by Step assessments are conducted over several stages. Assessors gather information through detailed interviews, reflective discussions, reference checks, review of relevant documentation, and consideration of applicants' life experiences, relationships, parenting capacity, understanding of trauma, and ability to work collaboratively with agencies and birth families. Clinical opinions are then formed by assessing the evidence against established competencies, ensuring a balanced and transparent assessment process.
This structured approach closely reflects the values of Apostolos Assessments.
Our commitment to integrity is demonstrated through objective, evidence-based clinical opinions. Compassion underpins the respectful and trauma-informed manner in which assessments are conducted. Resilience is recognised by exploring applicants' strengths, protective factors, and capacity to support children with complex needs. Finally, service to others is reflected in our commitment to providing high-quality assessments that assist agencies, courts, and families to make informed decisions in the best interests of children.
By combining accredited Step by Step methodology with extensive clinical expertise in trauma, attachment, behaviour support, neurodevelopment, and mental health, Apostolos Assessments provides independent, impartial, and professionally rigorous assessments that promote safe and positive outcomes for children, young people, and families.
